  • NOTE: Starting with earliest family legends, then to my earliest documented EDDLEMAN ancestor (my great-great-great-great-great-grandparents), continuing through current descendants, here is my EDDLEMAN family history. This page will continue to be revised, because the research is in progress, and probably will be for a long time to come. So... please visit again. Also, please contact me with any information/documentation which could help put this history together.

This first section of the EDDLEMAN Family history is a compilation of consistent family stories and reports, but this chapter still lacks adequate research documentation. So... we must continue to research to try to prove (or disprove) some of these early reports.

A few years ago, my first cousin by marriage removed two times (Mary EDDLEMAN of Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana. Wife of Charles EDDLEMAN.) tells me that a man named Riley EDDLEMAN of Saint Louis, Missouri researched our family history in great detail, and that he was working on a book on the EDDLEMAN Family. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find his work, and we don't even know if Riley is still living. Mary reported, however, that Riley had traced the EDDLEMAN family back to the year 1357 A.D., from which time he has an EDELMANN baptismal record from the Munster Church in Switzerland. Our EDELMANN immigrant ancestors in the 1700's were referred to as "Palatines" on ship rosters and records of loyalty oaths, suggesting that they came from the Rhineland Palatinate region of Germany, but other sources confirm that many Palatines originated in the Swiss Alps. Mary noted that according to Riley EDDLEMAN's research, the first EDELMANN in this country who was our direct ancestor arrived in 1731 A.D. In that year, two brothers, Adam EDELMANN and Jacob EDELMANN arrived at the Philadelphia port and moved to North Hampton County, Pennsylvania. Adam may have eventually moved to North Carolina. Jacob eventually moved west. Mary was told that we descend from this Adam EDELMANN. However, information presented at http://www.disknet.com/indiana_biolab/eg800.htm indicates that it is more likely that we descend from the other brother, Jacob (Filb 'Phillip' Jakob EDELMANN).

Before proceding to the next section, which contains more-established information about our EDDLEMAN ancestry, I should add that it is a consistent family legend that we descend from the union of an Eddleman man with a woman who was of the UTE Tribe of Native Americans. For more information about what we know about this, please go to my UTE Tribe ancestral page.

With better documentation than in the previous section, and thanks to Verlin EDDLEMAN, we now move to the next generation. My great-great-great-great-great-grandmother was Catherine EDDLEMAN. She was married to David Eddleman according to old written summaries given to me by older relatives. This David and Catherine brought their family from North Carolina to Bourbon County, Kentucky in about 1780. David and his son, James, were presumed killed in the Ruddles Station Massacre.

(NOTE: There is a wonderful Web Site on the Ruddles Station Massacre at: http://www.webpub.com/jhagee/ruddles.html and another at http://www.disknet.com/indiana_biolab/eg488.htm.)

It is reported that David's son Daniel was kidnapped by Native Americans during the massacre. Interestingly, my branch of the family has a legend suggesting that David's son, John EDDLEMAN (my great-great-great-great-grandfather) was kidnapped by Indians. At any rate, the two surviving sons, Daniel and John, ended up back with their mother, Catherine.
    • Catherine remarried to John BURGER, Sr.
    • John and Catherine BURGER and the EDDLEMAN sons lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky until 1811 when John EDDLEMAN and Daniel EDDLEMAN accompanied their mother and step-father in a move to Jefferson County, Indiana.
    • Catherine EDDLEMAN BURGER and John BURGER, Sr. owned property in Jefferson County, Indiana.
    • Daniel EDDLEMAN married Sarah RICH in 1799.
      • Daniel had children who married in Jefferson County, Indiana between 1828 and 1832, These children all moved away except for one son.
    • John EDDLEMAN married Mary (ZUMWALT?) and moved to a section of Harrison County, Indiana which subsequently became Floyd County, Indiana.

    My great-great-great-great-great-grandmother was Catherine Eddleman.

According to the helpful data and materials shared by Harold Eddleman, PhD
    at http://www.disknet.com/indiana_biolab/eg800.htm
    My great-great-great-great-great-grandfather probably was:

    • David EDDLEMAN

If records on David Eddleman from Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Kentucky refer to the same person, then this David Eddleman was a son of Filb 'Phillip' Jakob EDELMANN who came from Rott, Alsace to Philadelphia in 1733.

This Filb 'Phillip' Jakob EDELMANN was married to Maria Margaretha WENNER, a daughter of Simon WENNER of Oberhoffen and Maria Dorothea BEYERFALCK.

This Filb 'Phillip' Jakob EDELMANN was a son of David EDELMANN, who also came from Rott, Alsace to Philadelphia in 1733.

    • Catherine Eddleman had a 2nd husband named John Burger.

    • The August 13, 1783 edition of The Pennsylvania Gazette (PHILADELPHIA, August 13), provides a list of about 200 people who had been liberated from many years of captivity by several Tribes of Native Americans. This list was given by Captain Dalton, Superintendant of Indian Affairs for the United States. This list can be seen at http://www.shawhan.com/indianprisoners.html.

Included on the list are Katy Etelmaw, David Etelmaw and Daniel Etelmaw.

It seems likely that these are our Catherine Eddleman and her two young sons, John and Daniel. (Perhaps our John Eddleman was John David or David John. We know that our John Eddleman would have been about 6 years old at the time of the Ruddle's Station Massacre of 1780, which occurred at what is now Cynthiana, Kentucky.)

In fact, visit my new page: Eddleman Family at Ruddle's Fort Massacre at http://grand_uncle_mark.home.insightbb.com/ruddles.html
